Issue 4: GEDA Insights

Welcome to the fourth edition of GEDA Insights, the Gender and Environment Data Alliance’s Newsletter. As an alliance of more than 80 organizations, GEDA serves as a hub to foster collaborations and joint action among diverse organizations working on the intersection of gender and environment through a data lens. In this issue, we interview new member Barranquilla+20, share new resources and opportunities, and cover the latest GEDA updates,  among other exciting news!

GreeNa platform

The Madani Foundation for Development, Core Partner of GEDA,  recently launched a specialized online platform called GreeNa platform for climate change awareness, adaptation, and mitigation efforts, with a focus on gender-sensitive approaches in Yemen. This platform serves as a hub for youth engagement, and through their program, they have effectively empowered young individuals to become proactive leaders in this domain.

Mujeres por la justicia climática

Barranquilla +20, Core Partner of GEDA, and Women for Climate Justice’s young researchers Eliana Arias and Vanessa Estrada developed the case study Mujeres por la justicia climática, providing insight on the construction of peace and security with a youth and gender perspective. This resource is provided in Spanish.

Links Between Women’s Land Tenure Security and Climate Action: An Evidence Brief

Landesa, Member of GEDA, published the report Links Between Women’s Land Tenure Security and Climate Action: An Evidence Brief, highlighting that “women’s land tenure security can help achieve climate change mitigation and adaptation through pathways involving long-term land investments, expanded range of response options, and more sustainable management of forest resources.”

Empowering Female Climate Change Activists in the Global South: The Path Toward Environmental Social Justice

Peg Spitzer of the State University of New York at Stony Brook, Core Partner of GEDA, published the book Empowering Female Climate Change Activists in the Global South: The Path Toward Environmental Social Justice, recounting the stories of Global South women activists who became part of the climate change movement and showcasing non-traditional data collecting.

UNFCCC COP28 GEDA Recap

What did GEDA do at COP? GEDA participated in COP28 through our side event Roots of Change, featuring the participation of several GEDA Members and Core Partners. The event explored non-traditional methods of data collection, as well as the importance of gender disaggregated data. GEDA also hosted a conversation circle, providing an informal place for networking and conversation around gender and environment data. For more information, read here!

Toward Equitable Arctic Observing Systems – tracking human well-being and advancing environmental observations through societal and intersectional lenses

On behalf of GEDA member Women of the Arctic (WoA), the IASSA Working Group on Gender in the Arctic, Women in Polar Science (WiPS) and Arctic PASSION, are hosting a session on March 27 at 13:30-16:00 (GMT) at the 2024 Arctic Observing Summit in Edinburgh, Scotland, analyzing the tracking of Arctic communities’ well-being amid environmental and socio-economic changes and exploring the creation of an inclusive, long-term monitoring system respecting local knowledge and rights . Toward Equitable Arctic Observing Systems – tracking human well-being and advancing environmental observations through societal and intersectional lenses

Join the Equality Insights team on their CSW parallel side event from 10.00-11.30 EDT CCUN, 11th floor in New York City. This panel session showcases Pacific leadership in developing and implementing an innovative individual-level gender-sensitive measure of multidimensional poverty.  Speakers will provide an overview of the Equality Insights measure and survey, and insights from use in Tonga and the Solomon Islands. They will explore factors that enable innovation, and what gender-sensitive data make possible for policy makers and advocates, towards accelerating change that leaves no one behind.  

Launch of Steering Committee Elections!  

We are excited to announce the official launch of GEDA’s Steering Committee Elections, with the support of the Interim Steering Committee.  The Steering Committee will take over the governance of GEDA in April 2024, for a two-year initial term. We are also full steam ahead in the new year with new activities led by our Advocacy and Outreach & Technical and Learning Working Groups, so keep an eye out for news in upcoming newsletters!
