Issue 1: GEDA Insights

Welcome to the first edition of GEDA Insights, a new newsletter from the Gender and Environment Data Alliance! Formed in 2021 as a commitment to advance the blueprint for feminist climate justice under the Generation Equality Forum, GEDA recently celebrated its launch at a hybrid event on the sidelines of the 77th UN General Assembly opening. As we officially get our operations underway, we are thrilled to formally introduce ourselves to potential partners and policy makers, to ensure that we collectively begin to fill the gap of gender and environment data as a tool towards more effective–and ultimately gender-transformative–climate action.

Launch of the Gender and Environment Data Alliance

Environmental change has differentiated impacts on different genders. There is increasing evidence that women and girls disproportionately suffer from climate change and environmental disasters. Presently, there is a massive shortage of gender-disaggregated data at the gender-environment nexus.

To surface these challenges as well as existing solutions, GEDA hosted a high-level launch event on the margins of the opening of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly and of New York Climate Week.

This 1 hour, 15-minute hybrid session features speakers from several of GEDA’s co-founding members, including UNFCCC, UNFPA, UN Women, Data2X, and WEDO.

Gender & Environment Data Spotlight

Brief: Gender Data Must Be The Bedrock of Climate Justice

This policy brief, produced by Data2X, the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD), and Women’s Environment & Development Organization (WEDO) on behalf of GEDA, highlights the importance of gender data to climate change adaptation and resilience.

Report: Gender and National Climate Planning

This study by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), co-convener of GEDA, aims to measure global progress on the inclusion of gender considerations and the adoption of gender-responsive policies and programming, showcasing good examples of gender-responsive components.

Brief: Women and the Environment – An Asia-Pacific Snapshot

This report explores the nexus between gender and the environment utilizing data from countries in Asia and the Pacific. It presents new estimates on a number of gender-environment related topics, and calls for the production of related data to fill existing data gaps. In Case You Missed It

GEDA was selected to be part of the third cohort of the ODI Data for Climate Resilience Peer Learning Network, along with five other organizations. This network seeks to facilitate learning among peers and collaborating with data experts to solve questions surrounding data. This space will further cement GEDA’s foundations as we discussed how to best integrate gender and climate data. Learn more about the ODI Peer Learning Network.

GEDA was well-represented at COP27. In the In-session Dialogue on Gender Budgeting, Angie Dazé from our member organization the International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) spoke about GEDA, highlighting that our aim is to “connect the dots between gender and environment data that does exist and get it into the hands of decision-makers and data users that are involved in advancing climate resilience and transformative environmental policy.”
